Purdue housing cooperative on probation for alcohol violations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University officials announced Thursday (June 10) that a student housing cooperative has been placed on probation for violating the university's alcohol regulations.

The Marwood Cooperative, a men's house at 136 Littleton St., was placed on probation until April 30, 2005, for hosting a party during the 2004 Grand Prix weekend at which alcoholic beverages were served to and consumed by minors.

"We have been able to greatly reduce the number of alcohol violations associated with Grand Prix through a variety of programs and alternative activities, but unfortunately we have not been able to eliminate them completely," said Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students.

Marwood is the third cooperative house placed on probation this year for alcohol violations. Gemini Cooperative and Ann Tweedale Cooperative were placed on probation for alcohol violations in unrelated incidents earlier in the year.

"We need to assist Purdue Cooperative Council in heightening their efforts for self-regulation of cooperatives," said Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students. "It is imperative that we help current students and alumni work as a team in regulating behavior and encouraging more social responsibility."

Purdue's 12 housing cooperatives are student-run independent living groups that are affiliated with the university and are bound by the same university rules that govern sororities and fraternities. Each student living at a cooperative contributes four to six hours of work per week to offset part of his or her housing costs.

Probation means the student organization retains all rights and privileges but is not in good standing with the university. Future violations of university regulations during the probationary period may result in stricter penalties.
