Public meeting regarding emerald ash borer

Experts from Purdue University and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will discuss potential damage, eradication and control measures, and answer questions from the public and the media regarding emerald ash borer.

The IDNR recently confirmed the presence of emerald ash borer, an exotic species of beetle that destroys ash trees, in LaGrange County, Ind. The insect destroyed more than 6 million ash trees near Detroit, Mich. Typically, 100 percent of ash trees that are infested will die in two to three years. The IDNR has quarantined ash and ash wood products in affected areas of LaGrange County.

Examples of emerald ash borer damage and specimens will be available.

WHEN: 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 9

WHERE: Community Building, LaGrange County Fairgrounds, LaGrange, Ind.

WHO: Purdue University entomologists and representatives from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The local Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service educator also will attend.

For more information about the public meeting, contact Steve Engleking, Extension educator, at (260) 499-6334. Media should contact Kay Hagen, News Writer, at (765) 494-6682 for more information.
