Storm runoff workshop to cover regulations and planning

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - When water from summer storms disappears down the drain, that's not the end of the problem. Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service is co-sponsoring a video seminar designed to help community officials address the many issues swirling around stormwater runoff.

Planning for Rural and Urban Stormwater Runoff can be viewed at 11 sites across Indiana starting at 7 p.m. June 3. The session is free, but preregistration is encouraged.

"Stormwater runoff is a problem for rural and urban communities and can cause flooding and property erosion," said Mike Ferree, Purdue Extension educator and member of the Purdue land use team. He said many communities must comply with new stormwater regulations that require local officials to address the concerns.

Topics to be covered during the session include the dynamics of drainage, regulatory requirements, best management practices, decision-making tools and methods for integrating stormwater management into local planning and zoning.
