Folk singer John Gorka appearing at Purdue in June

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Folk musician John Gorka will appear at Purdue University on June 6 with folk band Mustard's Retreat as the opening act.

The show, presented by Purdue Convocations and Friends of Bob, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.

Gorka began his solo career while attending Moravian College in Pennsylvania in the mid-1980s. He started pursuing music full time in 1986, releasing his first record on Red House Records in 1987. Gorka has performed with artists including Shawn Colvin, Christine Lavin, Dave Van Ronk, Cliff Eberhardt and David Massengill. His latest album, "Old Futures Gone," is his ninth.

Gorka describes folk music as "more of an attitude or an approach than a musical style. Folk music is music that makes a difference in people's lives and one that finds a useful place. And there is more than one way to get there. To make music that makes a difference is the ideal. I guess that is my mission statement, my musical manifesto."

The two-member band Mustard's Retreat will open the show. David Tamulevich and Michael Hough have been performing together for 31 years. Their live performances have garnered rave reviews.

New York's Lincoln Center producer Coleman Barkin said, "Simply put, Mustard's Retreat is the best," and the "Michigan Times" called the show "music to cure what ails you."

Tickets are $19.50 in advance and $22.50 the day of the show. Ticket price includes a $1 service fee. Tickets are on sale now at any campus box office by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW, or at Von's Records, JL Records, McGuire Music and Sound and Klaverenga Guitar & Piano Studio.
