School of Consumer and Family Sciences honors alumni

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's School of Consumer and Family Sciences recently recognized alumni for their contributions to the school and for leadership within their professions.

Those honored were Katherine Dirks, Scott R. Haner, Hoyt D. Jones III, Becky Brown Newell, Dr. Paula K. Shireman, Kathleen Shellenberger Longo, Mary Smith Thaman and Bill and Sally Berner Hanley.

The following five alumni received awards for significant career advancement, long-term leadership within their chosen profession and noteworthy professional accomplishments:

• Katherine Dirks received her bachelor's degree in clothing and textiles in 1971 and now works as a museum specialist in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. She oversees all activities in the laboratory of the textile collection, which consists of about 50,000 items dating from the 17th century.

• Scott R. Haner received a bachelor's degree in hospitality and tourism management in 1979. He is vice president of franchise sales and emerging concepts for YUM! Brands in Louisville, Ky., where he is responsible for testing new concepts for restaurants where two brands are combined in one location. YUM! is the parent company for several restaurant chains, including KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Long John Silvers.

• Hoyt D. Jones III graduated in 1982 with a master's degree in hospitality and tourism management. He is now president and owner of Pizza Pride Inc., based in Ann Arbor, Mich., after rising to the position of executive vice president of franchise operations for the U.S. and overseeing more than 4,000 stores.

• Becky Brown Newell graduated with a bachelor's degree in consumer and family science education in 1966 and a year later earned a master's degree in consumer sciences and retailing. She is the chairwoman and teacher of family and consumer sciences for Tippecanoe School Corporation in Lafayette, Ind., and has designed an award-winning program, "The Factory – Make Your Own Fortune," that lets students experience the development, manufacturing, distribution and decision making involved in producing goods in a market economy.

• Dr. Paula K. Shireman is a 1986 graduate of Purdue's foods and nutrition bachelor's degree program. She is a vascular surgeon and assistant professor of vascular surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Other awards were presented to:

• Kathleen Shellenberger Longo, who received the Outstanding Young Professional Award. The 1992 graduate earned a bachelor's degree in consumer sciences and retailing. She is a certified financial planner and principal partner with Accredited Investors in Edina, Minn., where she manages 180 clients with $230 million in assets. In the June 2002 issue of Financial Advisor magazine, she was named one of the "future stars" of the financial planning industry.

• Mary Smith Thaman, of Bryan, Ohio, who received the Community Service Award. Thaman, who earned a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition in business in 1949, is a spokesperson and volunteer for Sun Management Services and Chief Supermarkets in Bryan.

• Bill and Sally Berner Hanley, of Omaha, Neb., who received the Friend of Purdue Award for their contributions to the School of Consumer and Family Sciences. He was a 1960 graduate with a degree in management, and she was a 1961 graduate with a degree in child development and family studies. In 2000 they gave CFS more than $1 million to fund a faculty position in gerontology.
