May 4, 2004 Third manufacturing summit to address state opportunitiesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Leaders of manufacturing enterprises will meet May 18 on the Purdue University campus to discuss the policies and partnerships needed to keep a strong manufacturing economic base in the state as part of Summit III: Advancing Manufacturing in Indiana.
Purdue President Martin C. Jischke has advocated locating an advanced manufacturing institute at Purdue to bring Indiana manufacturers together with researchers and provide a competitive advantage for the state. "Manufacturing in Indiana is at a critical point of transition," Jischke said. "We must continue to examine the current situation and look for ways to ensure the future of manufacturing, both in Indiana and the nation." In addition to Jischke, speakers for the morning session will include Don Gentry, Purdue's vice provost for engagement; Lee Lewellen, vice president of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP); Patrick Kiely (videotaped), president and CEO of the Indiana Manufacturers Association (IMA); and Tim Monger, executive director of the Indiana Department of Commerce. Purdue and CICP, in cooperation with the IMA, are sponsoring the summit, which kicks off at 9 a.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. The summit is free, and Indiana manufacturers, government policy-makers and the public can register online or by calling (765) 494-2758. At 10:05 a.m., panelists, including Jischke and Lewellen, will be joined by the IMA's Brian Burton, Monger and W. Parker Sykes, director of manufacturing engineering of Rolls-Royce Corp., who will all field questions from attendees. Beginning at 10:45 a.m., parallel sessions will offer moderated panels on marketing advanced manufacturing; what industry wants from a university partnership; Six Sigma/lean manufacturing; transportation, distribution and logistics; small business concerns; and emerging technologies. Panelists will include industry leaders, government officials and Purdue researchers. Speaking at the 12:30 p.m. luncheon, provided by the conference in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union, will be CICP President David Goodrich, state Sen. David Ford and Richard Erwin, general director of operations worldwide for Delphi Delco. The summit adjourns at 3:45 p.m. John A. Schneider, assistant vice provost for industry research and a conference organizer, said the summit provides an opportunity for Purdue leaders, Indiana manufacturers and public policy decision makers to discuss the future of manufacturing in the state. "When you put Indiana's traditional manufacturing strength together with the university's research in manufacturing-related areas, we have the ingredients that add up to a potential competitive advantage," Schneider said. "What remains to be done is to put into place a structure to solve problems and create opportunities." Writer: Mike Lillich, (765) 494-2077, mlillich@purdue.edu Sources: Martin C.
