Purdue Theatre student runner-up at Kennedy Center

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A junior in Purdue Theatre's costume design program was named first runner-up at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival national competition this month. Katie Miles, Fort. Wayne, Ind., designed costumes for a November 2003 production of "The Cherry Orchard." She won the Region III Barbizon Award for Design Excellence and was the sixth student to represent Purdue Theatre at the national level in the past six years. She is the program's second national runner-up from that group. Miles attended a design workshop in Washington, D.C., presented by G.W. Mercier (set, puppet and costume designer, and Tony nominee for scenery for Julie Taymor's "Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass") and other workshops. KCACTF is a national theater education program that identifies and promotes quality in college-level theater production. Last year more than 1,200 productions, involving more than 20,000 students nationwide, entered KCACTF. Each season, Purdue Theatre enters its Mainstage and Studio productions in the competition.
