Purdue police investigate two fake bills used on campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police are investigating the origin of two counterfeit $20 bills that were discovered on campus Thursday (April 29).

Deputy Chief Steven R. Dietrich said the bills were part of separate deposits made to the bursar's office from the Purdue Grand Prix and Purdue Repertory Dance Company.

Each counterfeit bill was a different shade of green than legitimate bills. The counterfeit bills also had uneven margins and were lacking some of special features of newer $20 bills, including magnetic strips and metallic fibers.

It is not known when, or under what circumstances, either bill was received initially, Dietrich said. He said he believes other counterfeit bills may have been used in the Lafayette/West Lafayette area.

"Unlike in the past, legitimate bills that are produced today should have a consistent color and texture," Dietrich said. "If you find one that makes you suspicious, you should contact police instead of taking a chance. Sometimes people have the bills and don't realize it, but any description we can get of the person passing the bills might help us find the source."

He said police have notified the Secret Service about the bills.

Manufacturing or knowingly using or possessing counterfeit bills is a violation of federal law and is punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $15,000.

Anyone with information or who believes they have received a counterfeit bill, should contact Purdue police at (765) 494-8221.
