April 29, 2004 Span Plan offers career-planning class for nontraditional studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University is offering a course to help the growing number of adults who find themselves suddenly out of work make informed decisions about career changes and planning their futures. "Many prospective adult learners are afraid to start college because they are unsure what they want to study," said Dorothy Hughes, career counselor at Purdue and instructor of the course. "Purdue's course, Life and Career Planning, can help them. It's designed to help adult, nontraditional students explore their life and career planning options through self-evaluation and objective assessment, the decision-making process, and exploring educational and vocational opportunities." The course is taught in an interactive style, with opportunities for self-exploration, she said. Students are encouraged to share ideas during in-class group exercises designed to develop and simulate the interpersonal and presentation skills that will be required in the world of work. Students may choose assignments that are most meaningful for their particular needs. The Span Plan Adult Student Services program in the Office of the Dean of Students and the Center for Lifelong Learning at Purdue jointly sponsor the Life and Career Planning class. The three credit-hour course, EDPS200X, is offered from 6-9 p.m. on Mondays beginning Aug. 16. Enrollment is limited to the first 20 people. For more information about the Life and Career Planning course and how to get started at Purdue, schedule an appointment with Hughes. That meeting will provide potential adult students with an instant connection to the Adult Student Services Program. Contact Hughes at (765) 494-7662, djhughes@purdue.edu.
