Nine awards given to student organizations, advisers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Office of the Dean of Students gave nine awards to student groups, their leaders and advisers for their dedication and service during the 2003-04 academic year.

Lucia Anderson, adviser to Maclure Cooperative, received the outstanding adviser award for best fulfilling the goals of serving as a role model to students, having a strong belief in the organization she represents, showing her willingness to commit time to the organization and involving students in the decision-making process. Amanda Maxwell, Maclure Cooperative public relations chairwoman, nominated Anderson, who received the award on April 7.

"Over the years, Lucia Anderson has become a vital member of our campus family, and thanks to her devotion and commitment, our organization continues to thrive and play an interactive role in the lives of its members," Maxwell says. "For example, in January our boiler caught on fire. Thankfully, the fire department successfully extinguished the flames before any more damage was done. Unfortunately, our house was without heat for two days in the dead of winter. Lucia warmly invited as many women as needed to spend the night at her house. She made sure every woman found a warm place to go for the night."

Other awards were presented at the Student Leader Recognition Banquet on April 15 in the Purdue Memorial Union Faculty Lounges. Will DeLozier, of Lincolnshire, Ill.; Katrina Olek, of West Lafayette, Ind.; Jessica Hoffman, of Brookville, Ind.; and Mark Triboletti, of Hammonton, N.J., received the Emerging Leader Award for excellent leadership, dedication and involvement in student organizations, and the potential for continued growth as a leader.

The Community Engagement and Involvement Award was presented to the Purdue Engineering Student Council for its programs dedicated to helping elementary schoolchildren learn and enjoy the natural sciences.

The Hillel Foundation received the Co-Sponsorship of the Year Award for its program "The Simpsons and Other Gentiles I Have Known." This program, part of Project Respect Week, featured a prominent comedian and fostered collaboration among several different groups on campus.

The 2004 Outstanding Program Award went to Mortar Board for its "Cookin' Up Leadership" conference in January. The program focused on leadership issues that pertain to college students and was attended by more than 400 students.

Purdue Student Government received the Excellence Award, a lifetime achievement award for a student organization. Purdue Student Government has helped get the expansion of the city bus system, worked to extend library hours during finals week, voiced the opinion of the student body to the president and other Purdue officials, and has provided numerous programs for students.

"These awards are a great way to recognize student leaders and advisers," says Bridget Williams Golden, of the Office of the Dean of Students. "Their dedication to the Purdue student body and greater community is noticed and appreciated."
