PMU lawn to get face-lift

Work is expected to begin in June to replace the reflecting pool on the south lawn of Purdue Memorial Union with a new, cleaner landscape design.

A plan to repace the shallow concrete pool with a lawn and a new floral display has been endorsed by several campus organizations.

The Purdue Student Union Board, the Architecture Landscape Design and Planning Committee, PMU management and staff, and the Purdue Capital Projects Council, all have studied and approved the renovation, which will be paid for with gift funds earmarked for the PMU south lawn by the Class of 1953.

"Consideration and planning for this project began nearly three years ago," says John Collier, landscape architect for Purdue. "The scope of the project has gone through several modifications along the way."

Collier says the project is intended to not only beautify the prominent area of campus, but to solve years of unsightly and costly problems inherent with the site.

"Maintaining the pool has required weekly draining, cleaning and filling with 10,000 gallons of potable water. This takes eight to 16 hours each week to fight a sometimes losing battle with waterlogged litter and algae," Collier says. "By comparison, maintenance for the lawn will be an hour or two per week of mowing during the growing season."

The university will advertise for bids on the project during May. If the bidding process is successful, work could begin at the site as early as the first week of June and be completed this fall.
