Purdue offers home-style advice during annual conference

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 91st annual Home and Family Conference will take place June 9-11 on the Purdue University campus.

"This conference is about bringing people together around a theme of home and family," said Karen DeZarn, conference chairperson. "We offer participants a wide variety of workshops and seminars, so there is something for everyone."

The conference's keynote speaker will be Judy O'Bannon, former first lady of Indiana. She will speak at 8 a.m. on June 10 at Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

O'Bannon, a graduate of Indiana University who earned a bachelor's degree in social work, will share her life experiences from childhood until present, and will not only encourage attendees to become involved in their community and state, but also to look more broadly at the nation and world.

"Judy O'Bannon has spent much of her life supporting and promoting efforts to strengthen Indiana communities," DeZarn said.

Other featured speakers and activities include:

• The Mossburg Strings will perform a concert at 8 p.m. on June 8 in Loeb Playhouse.

• Judith A. Myers-Walls, Purdue Extension specialist, and co-presenter Larissa Frias, graduate student in consumer and family sciences will offer a session, "Celebrating Families Around the World: 10th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family," on June 9 in Stewart Center, Room 214 A-B.

• Elizabeth Falls, a native of Shelby County and a graduate of Butler University, will speak on "The Quiet Strength," a program focusing on the strength, surviorship and history of women, during a June 10 luncheon in the North and South ballrooms of the Purdue Memorial Union.

• Concurrent morning tours will be offered on June 10. Tours include: the Farmers' Institute Academy, a primary through college prep school operated by The Society of Friends of the Quaker Church, and Sarah's Oaks, a historic Quaker home that serves as a restaurant, flower garden and gift shop; The Indiana Soldiers Home; Samara, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home; and Wolf Park, featuring several packs of gray wolves, plus foxes, bison and a coyote.

• The Indiana Extension Homemakers Association will provide a choral performance at 7:30 p.m. on June 10 in the Elliot Hall of Music.

• James Schneider, a motivational speaker for Blue Chip Attitudes, will provide a keynote presentation on June 11 in Loeb Playhouse titled "The Best Ways to Kill a Good Organization ... How to Deal With Them."

• The Extension Homemakers will present a style show, titled Changing of Our World, in the union's North Ballroom during the June 11 closing luncheon.

In addition, concurrent sessions will cover many home and family topics including vitamin supplements, financial security, information on selecting books for children, a fish cooking demonstration, sibling relationships, food choice and obesity, fitness, caring for plants and flowers, coping with stress, organization of family medical records, and identity theft.

Cost to register for the entire conference is $50. The single-day fee for June 9 or June 10 is $32. The fee for June 11 is $25. For those interested in attending only the evening entertainment programs on June 8 or June 10, there is a $5 fee for each evening.

There also are rooms available through Purdue University Housing at Hawkins Hall, located across the street from Stewart Center. Conference registration takes place upon arrival.
