Student to share trip to Cuba at Black Cultural Center library talk

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Black Cultural Center library is sponsoring a student lecture, "Cuba Through the Eyes of Craig Wesley: A Study Abroad Experience," at 6 p.m. Friday (4/23).

Wesley, of Gary, Ind., is a library aide and graduating senior with a major in history and a minor in political science. His talk, which is free and open to the public, will be in the Black Cultural Center, Multipurpose Room II.

Wesley recently attended the 28th annual conference of the National Council for Black Studies and plans to pursue graduate work in African-American studies.

"Using photographs and vivid memory, Craig will share his exposure to the presence of a rich African culture in Cuba," says Dorothy Washington, Black Cultural Center librarian. "An African cultural value system is present in the life of African peoples worldwide, on the continent and in the African diaspora. Study Abroad opportunities provide an excellent experience that allows students to gain a broader understanding of other cultures, as well as explore commonalities with their own."

Wesley was among a group of students who traveled to Cuba during Maymester 2003 with Antonio Tillis, assistant professor of African-American studies in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
