April 16, 2003 Faculty and staff honors The Purdue University News Service and Agricultural Communication Service have won a top prize for science and research writing. The national award, a silver medal, recognizes the writing, marketing, editing, videography and photography of staff members Chad Boutin, Emil Venere, Jenny Cutraro, Dave Umberger, Jesica Webb, Brian Zink and Ted Schellenberger. The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which represents about 3,300 colleges and universities across the country, sponsored the competition. Judges included other public relations professionals and science journalists. Thomas Templin, professor and head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology, was named the president-elect of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. The organization represents 20,000 physical education teachers, youth sport professionals and university faculty in kinesiology. Jack Spencer, a professor of sociology who studies youth violence, has received a Purdue Faculty Summer Fellowship that will allow him to collaborate with the Crime Control Policy Center in Indianapolis. Spencer will collaborate with other research fellows at the center. His work will focus on his book about how the media portray violent youth. Li Zhang, assistant professor of visual and performing arts, was honored for her posters "Chinese Character" and "Designing Across Borders." The award is from Graphis, an international design magazine. Alumni honors Patricia D. Galloway, chief executive officer and president of The Nielsen-Wurster Group Inc., an international management consulting firm with offices throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, is on the Rising to Lead panel of accomplished female executives. The group is touring the United States and sharing their stories of exceptional career success in the technology sector. The tour is organized by the corporate offices of the Alliance of Technology and Women. The panel includes women who have reached a leadership position of nationwide prominence in a technical field or technology-related organization. Galloway was the first woman selected to serve as president of the American Society of Civil Engineers. A licensed professional civil engineer, Galloway also is a certified Project Management Professional and a member of the Academy of Experts (U.K.). She earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Purdue and a master's in business administration from the New York Institute of Technology.
