April 15, 2004 Black caucus to honor outstanding studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's outstanding African-American students will be recognized during the 29th annual Academic and Service Awards Program. The Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff and the Purdue Black Alumni Association will sponsor the event at noon Saturday (4/17) in the Elliott Hall of Music. African American undergraduates will be recognized for their high academic achievements, said Sandra Barnes, assistant professor of sociology and African American Studies. Students with noteworthy service and leadership talents are also honored. Nearly 200 students will be recognized this year. The keynote speaker for the event will be Venetria Patton, director of the African American Studies and Research Center. The event will also honor Clara Bell, the late professor emerita of nursing. Georgette Abaa, a senior majoring in nursing from Naples, Fla., will be presented with the ninth Clara Bell Academic Achievement Award during the event. This year the groups have also established special recognition awards for the Parent of the Year, Professor of the Year and Department of the Year to honor persons and groups that have been instrumental in the academic success of African American students on campus.
