Purdue offers vine-to-wine experience at spring program

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University-based Indiana Wine Grape Council will focus on winemaking, marketing and grape growing at its spring workshop on Monday (4/12).

The annual Grape and Wine Spring Workshop will take place at the Anderson Orchard and Winery, located at 430 East U.S. 6 in Valparaiso, Ind.

"People who are interested in starting a vineyard or winery are encouraged to attend this program," said Jill Blume, Purdue enology assistant and workshop coordinator. "The workshop will provide information ranging from wine tasting to the business of selling your product to the consumer."

The program begins at 10 a.m. EST with registration and coffee, juice and pastries provided by the Anderson Bakery.

The workshop will continue at 10:30 a.m. with Blume presenting a seminar on Chardonel tasting. This topic includes the descriptive analysis and methodology of Chardonel wine.

Lunch will be provided for participants at 1 p.m.

Other presenters include:

• Scott Downey, associate director of Purdue's Center for Food and Agricultural Business, who will discuss creating customer value and delivering quality service.

• Bruce Bordelon, associate professor and viticulture specialist, and Dave Lundstrom, owner/winemaker, will conduct a vineyard tour and discuss winter plant injury and ways to avoid frost damage. They also will give demonstrations of vineyard equipment.

• Ellie Harkness, enology specialist, will talk about acid management of wine, including how to understand wine acidity and ways to increase and decrease acidity.

The workshop is limited to 50 participants. Registration cost is $20 for Indiana Guild members or $30 for non-members. Checks should be made payable to the Indiana Winegrower's Guild.
