April 2, 2004 International Awareness Week promotes cultural diversityWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University will celebrate its fourth annual International Awareness Week on April 12-18 with a variety of events that are open to the public. "I encourage everyone to take advantage of this festive week when we recognize and celebrate some of the cultural traditions representative of Purdue's international community," says Michael Brzezinski, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars. More than 5,000 international students and 700 international faculty and staff from 126 countries are working or studying on the West Lafayette campus. The week's preview event is "Nada-Laya: A Confluence of Melody and Rhythm," featuring Shashank, a world-renowned flutist, and a six-member ensemble. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday (4/9) in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse and is sponsored by the Indian Classical Music Association at Purdue. Other activities include artistic demonstrations, ethnic themed meals, cultural presentations, discussion forums and simulations. Among the weekend highlights are: The International Food Bazaar, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at University Church, 320 North St. International Fest 2004, 4-10 p.m. Sunday, April 18, in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom. The festival features interactive displays, student-led musical performances, a fashion show and refreshments. At 9 p.m., campus dance clubs will perform ethnic dances and teach dance steps. "Wear your dancing shoes and join the fun," says Deniz Husrev, Argentine Tango Club choreographer and show organizer. Participating partners in Purdue's International Awareness Week include the Purdue Student Union Board, the Office of Programs for Study Abroad, University Residences, the International Center of Greater Lafayette Inc., and more than 20 student organizations.
