Indianapolis woman receives national nutrition education award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The national Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) honored an Indiana woman for serving as a role model to others.

Tanya Martin, of Indianapolis, received an Excellence in EFNEP national award during the program's 35th anniversary ceremony on March 2 in Washington, D.C. Martin, a single mother of six, learned of EFNEP in 1986, and shortly after, she enrolled and successfully completed the program.

EFNEP operates in all 50 states and is overseen in Indiana by Purdue University Cooperative Extension. The program helps families and youth with limited resources improve their health and well-being through better diets, food budgeting techniques and physical activity. EFNEP also offers a series of lessons based on research and is tailored to meet individual needs.

After completing the program, Martin obtained a job working for EFNEP and served as a role model to families, teaching participants about nutrition, how to save money on groceries, and encouraging them to try new recipes.

Martin earned an associate's degree in behavior sciences at Vincennes University, and a bachelor's degree in addictions counseling and master's degree in urban ministry at Martin University in Indianapolis.

Martin, who currently works for the Marion County Health Department as a community health worker, continues to support EFNEP by referring families to the Indianapolis program.

The Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension's EFNEP program began in 1969. The program assists limited resource families in acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes and making behavior changes necessary to make sound nutrition choices that contribute to personal development and improve total family diet and nutritional well-being. Purdue is a Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension state partner.
