March 1, 2004 Purdue starts Disability Awareness Month with Focus AwardsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University kicks off its observance of Disability Awareness Month on Tuesday (3/2) with Freedom From Exclusion, a reception honoring the university's 2004 Focus Award recipients. Purdue alumnus Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of National Industries for the Blind, will be the guest speaker at the reception, which will be from 10-11 a.m. in Purdue Memorial Union's East Faculty Lounge. Diana Prieto, director of the Affirmative Action Office, will give opening remarks, and Alysa C. Rollock, vice president for human relations, will present the awards. Focus Awards are given annually to individuals affiliated with Purdue who have advanced the university's commitment to improving disability accessibility and diversity. The reception is co-sponsored by the Affirmative Action Office, Adaptive Programs, Physical Facilities and Human Resource Services. Other events in recognition of Disability Awareness Month include an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with information on what the law means, its history and what is in store for the future. The presentation will be 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 11, in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 258. Also on the agenda is a talk by Dominic Marinelli, of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association, on the use of the International Building Code and what that means regarding compliance with ADA architectural guidelines. Marinelli will examine when the "most stringent standard" provisions of the guidelines came into play and how the requirements of the code interact with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The talk is a 2004 ADA Distance Learning Series program and will be at 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in Stewart Center, Room 204. ADA for Supervisors, an employment-focused workshop for campus supervisors on implementing the ADA, will take place from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in Stewart Center, Room 311. "PADI and the Ten Commandments," a panel discussion in which Purdue students with disabilities will share their campus experiences and answer audience questions, will be held along with a viewing of the video "The Ten Commandments of Communicating with People with Disabilities," from 2:30-4 p.m. Monday, March 29, in Stewart Center, Room 214C.
