March 1, 2004 Black Cultural Center to sponsor professionalism workshopWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A free workshop for students and the community, with the theme of "Tomorrow's Professional," will take place Wednesday (3/10) at Purdue University's Black Cultural Center. Speakers for the 6:30 p.m. workshop are Renee Thomas, director of the Black Cultural Center; McKenzie Lewis, director of diversity and inclusion at Clarian Health of Indianapolis; and Timothy Luzader, director of Purdue's Center for Career Opportunities. "The old saying that people don't get a second chance to make a first impression is still true, and a good first impression can make or break a person's chances in the job market," said workshop facilitator Donna Hall. "This workshop will help people prepare for a job interview and will also teach a variety of other skills necessary for developing professionals." Every year the Black Cultural Center sponsors a professionalism workshop, which is chaired by Purdue students and features speakers who offer tips on becoming a successful professional. Topics include resume building, the appearance of professionalism and professional diversity in the workplace. The professionalism workshop provides the student-planners with an opportunity to develop leadership and cooperation skills and gives participants insight into the proper procedures of marketing oneself for a job or career. The Black Cultural Center, which has been part of the Purdue campus since 1969, exists to enhance the community's understanding of the cultural richness of the African-American experience.
