February 27, 2004 Science Bound students to explore careers with Indy business leadersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Approximately 50 Science Bound students from Indianapolis Public Schools will explore careers in engineering, life sciences and technology during a Purdue University sponsored Career Day at Arsenal Tech High School in Indianapolis. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 13. The students will participate in workshops developed by Indianapolis business leaders from Bowen Engineering, Shiel Sexton Construction, Rolls Royce, Raytheon Co., Sallie Mae, Indianapolis Power & Light Co., General Electric Co., Eli Lilly and Co. and USA Funds. "The students will learn how the companies enhance the quality of life for Hoosiers and what careers are available at those companies," said Wesley Campbell, Science Bound director. "It's vital that Science Bound stimulates these students to think long-term about what skills they want to acquire and how higher education can help them realize their career aspirations." After the presentations, students will be informed about future field trips to some of the participating businesses. The students also will attend a performance by the Purdue Symphony Orchestra and tenor Daniel Rodriguez at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at the Hilbert Circle Theater in Indianapolis. Science Bound, a program initiated in 2002 by Purdue President Martin C. Jischke, mentors eighth-grade to 12th-grade Indianapolis Public Schools students and encourages them to take classes in preparation for future careers in science, engineering, technology, agriculture and math-science education. Upon acceptance, Science Bound students receive an opportunity to earn a full-tuition scholarship to Purdue to study in an approved technical field.
