February 26, 2004 Purdue's Indian Students Association placed on probationWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University officials announced today (Thursday, 2/26) that the Indian Student Association has been placed on probation for failure to follow university event planning and financial procedures. The student group failed to properly file plans with the Office of the Dean of Students for its Oct. 18 fund-raising event, called Antakshari, said L. Tony Hawkins, dean of students. He said the organization also failed to use an accounting system for the money raised from that event and failed to deposit the money in a timely manner. The group is on probation until Aug. 30. "Whenever a student group is organizing an event that is open to the public, they need to follow university protocol, especially when it involves the collection of money," Hawkins said. "This probation is a reminder to the students that there is a purpose for our regulations, and they need to follow them." Although placed on probation, the Indian Students Association retains all rights and privileges but is being monitored by the university, Hawkins said. Future violations of university regulations during the probation period could result in a stricter sanction. The Indian Students Association, which has about 250 members, is one of more than 650 recognized organizations at Purdue. Writer: Reni Winter, (765) 496-3133, rwinter@purdue.edu Source: L.
