Participants sought for Purdue auditory study

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University professor of audiology and hearing sciences is seeking adults with cochlear implants to participate in a study to evaluate the effectiveness of various advanced technologies for cochlear implants.

King Chung, assistant professor of audiology and speech sciences in the School of Liberal Arts, needs 25 females and 25 males with cochlear implants for the study. Participants will listen to sentences in background noise, and they will then be asked to repeat the sentences or to rate the sound quality of the sentences.

"The focus of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of several cutting-edge technologies on enhancing cochlear implant performance," Chung said. "The results from this study will help us understand if these advanced technologies can help people with cochlear implants to improve their speech understanding and perceived sound quality, as well as the convenience of cochlear implant use."

Participants will be compensated $20 an hour. The experiment typically lasts less than 3 hours. Traveling expenses to West Lafayette also will be paid. For additional information, please contact Chung at (765) 494-0402, kingchung@purdue.edu.

Chung's research is funded by American Academy of Audiology and Purdue.
