Purdue program offers ingredients for starting a food business

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University will offer an introductory workshop on how to create a specialty food or food ingredient business in Indiana.

The program will take place April 9 at the Indiana Farm Bureau Inc., 225 S. East St., Indianapolis. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the program will conclude at 4:30 p.m.

"Through this workshop, homemakers and producers can learn the basics of developing and selling a specialty food product or ingredient in order to add more value to Indiana commodities," said Linda Wood, regional director of the Southeastern Indiana Small Business Development Center.

The workshop is designed for individuals interested in developing a specialty food or food ingredient business. Topics to be discussed include business planning, marketing, food regulations, food safety, product and process development, and packaging. Purdue food sciences experts and Extension educators will lead the breakout sessions. There also will be question-and-answer sessions with the speakers and food industry entrepreneurs.

"This workshop is a great opportunity to expand your list of food industry contacts, resources and experts," Wood said.

Cost to register is $75, which includes an information binder, refreshments and lunch. Registration is due April 7, and enrollment is limited to 50 participants.

To register, contact the Southeastern Indiana Small Business Development Center at (812) 265-3127.
