Teleconference to focus on recent folic acid research

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A teleconference for educators and health care professionals about the latest research on folic acid and its contributions to good health will be broadcast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 11 on the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunications System (IHETS).

"The program, Folic Acid for Life, will focus on the importance of folic acid for women of childbearing age to prevent neural tube defects, and then expands to folic acid for the health of everyone," said Donna Vandergraff, a Purdue University Extension specialist in foods and nutrition.

Vandergraff will be the facilitator of the free videoconference featuring guest speakers Carol Boushey and Karla Damus. Viewers may ask questions of the presenters via phone, fax or e-mail.

Boushey, assistant professor of foods and nutrition at Purdue, will cover the importance of including folic acid into the daily diet. Damus, associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, will focus on the role of health care providers in encouraging folic acid intake.

The Folic Acid for Life teleconference is sponsored by the Indiana Folic Acid Council co-chaired by the Indiana Chapter of March of Dimes, Purdue Extension and Department of Foods and Nutrition, Indiana University School of Medicine and Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics.

In addition, Folic Acid for Life will provide continuing education credits for the following organizations: American Dietetic Association, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, Indiana State Nurses Association, American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences and the American Board of Genetic Counselors.
