Speakers, film focus on gay rights in Israel

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Gay Rights in the Israeli Military and Israeli Society, a talk and film screening, will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Hillel Foundation.

Sagit Kaufman, director of public affairs at the Israeli Consulate for the Midwest, and Steve Dishler, former paratrooper with the Israel Defense Forces, will discuss issues and experiences related to gay rights in Israel and the Israeli military. The movie "Yossie and Jagger," about two gay Israeli soldiers, also will be shown. The event is being presented by the Israel Council at Purdue and the Queer Student Union.

Kaufman was a member of the permanent academic legal staff as an assistant professor on the law faculty at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, Israel, where she taught courses on property and criminal law.

Dishler is on the staff of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Chicago.

The presentation, part of Project Respect at Purdue, is funded by a grant from the Avi Chai Foundation, a private foundation endowed by Zalman C. Bernstein and committed to the perpetuation of the Jewish people, Judaism and the state of Israel.
