February 16, 2004 Purdue police arrest student for alleged drug possessionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University police on Friday (2/13) arrested a student after marijuana was allegedly found in his room. Steven R. Dietrich, interim Purdue chief of police, said officers were called to the fourth floor of Tarkington Hall shortly after 11 p.m. Friday on a complaint of marijuana in the room of Manvel E. Biggs. Officers found more than 30 grams of marijuana and paraphernalia in the room. Biggs, 18, a freshman in management from Valparaiso, Ind., was arrested on suspicion of possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana, maintaining a common nuisance and reckless possession of paraphernalia. He was released from the Tippecanoe County Jail on $5,000 bond. Possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance are both Class D felonies, punishable by up to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Reckless possession of paraphernalia is a Class B misdemeanor, carrying a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
