Family and community a priority in annual Purdue award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University is accepting nominations for its third annual Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award, which goes to a program or collaboration that has improved the well-being of Indiana families.

Also, any youth program serving both caregivers and children will be considered for the award. Organizations that directly impact the whole family are encouraged to apply. The award, sponsored by Purdue's School of Consumer and Family Sciences, honors organizations that emphasize unifying the family and have a direct impact on the community.

"We believe that healthy communities support healthy families, and we want to reward both the winning nomination and their community for their efforts," said Karen DeZarn, coordinator of the award committee and a Purdue Extension educator.

DeZarn said that a monetary award of $1,500 will be given to the organization of the winning nominee's choice. An award of $250 will be given to a select group of finalists.

Nominations will be accepted until March 15. Self-nominations of an organization, program or collaboration are welcome, however, they must have the signed endorsement of a community foundation officer. Nomination forms are available by calling (765) 494-8252 or can be downloaded.

Nominees from last year's competition are encouraged to reapply for the award. Past nominees include organizations that have unified family members or have helped people become more knowledgeable and self-sufficient by connecting family members with their community.

Last year's winner was the DIPLOMAS In-School Childcare Program, Richmond, Ind., in Wayne County. The DIPLOMAS program enables teen parents to become self-sufficient citizens and effective parents by providing affordable, developmentally appropriate child care. The program also provides a network of community support services that enable teen parents to attend high school full time to earn diplomas or GEDs.
