Nominations sought for Violet Haas Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Council on the Status of Women at Purdue is seeking nominations for the organization's annual Violet Haas Award, which honors an individual, program or department that has made an outstanding effort toward the advancement of women at the university.

The achievement can include improvement in hiring and promotion practices, educational opportunities, salaries or generally enhancing a positive professional climate for women.

Nomination letters with support statements (up to three pages) and the nominee's resume (up to four pages, if applicable), must be received by Feb. 27 to be considered for the 2004 award. If the nominee is a department, then supporting statements are sufficient. Past winners are ineligible.

Nomination packets should be sent to Debbie Sherman, selection committee chair, Life Science Microscopy Facility, Whistler Bldg., 170 S. University St. For information, contact Sherman at (765) 494-6666, dsherman@purdue.edu.

The Council on the Status of Women established the Violet Haas Award in 1990. Last year's winner was Martha Chiscon, biological sciences professor emerita and retired associate dean in the School of Science.

Haas was a faculty member in the School of Electrical Engineering from 1962 until her death in 1986. She promoted women's issues and provided a positive role model for the university's faculty, staff and students.
