February 6, 2004 Purdue student groups to get more space, PEFCU to open Union branchWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue Student Union Board announced today (Friday, 2/6) that Purdue University will double the number of office spaces provided to student groups in the Purdue Memorial Union and Stewart Center. The new space is near existing student group offices. It will become available after the Development and Alumni Information Services Office and the Center for Instructional Excellence move to the new Dauch Alumni Center in April and Young Hall in July, respectively. The Purdue Alumni Association also will move to the Dauch Alumni Center, making space available on the union's first floor for the Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) to open a branch office and for the union's Catering and Events Office to relocate. "Currently 41 recognized student groups have their offices in the Union or Stewart," said Robert Mindrum, Union director. "Now, with 4,500 additional square feet and some remodeling to meet modern standards, we expect to serve 82." The Student Union Board is responsible for managing all student office space in the Union and Stewart Center. Richard W. Binder, president of the Purdue Student Union Board and a junior in the School of Management, said, "Student groups have needed more space, and we're excited to be able to double the number of offices. The spaces will be allocated, as always, based on an annual application/allocation process." Construction will take place this year and next during the summers. Student groups may obtain applications beginning Feb. 13 at the PSUB office, Room 268 of the Memorial Union. The deadline for applying for space for this fall is March 5. Matthew E. Morgan, president of Purdue Student Government and a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, said, "This is a tremendous opportunity for student organizations that need a place on campus. It will provide the home base that student groups need and also will provide a place where potential new members can expect to find them. "I expect it will help us get even more Purdue students involved." The PEFCU branch will be located in Room 163, directly across from the present alumni association main office. The PEFCU branch, expected to open by August, will operate under a lease agreement with Purdue. William F. Connors, president/CEO for PEFCU said, "This will be our seventh location, and we hope that Purdue faculty, staff, students and retirees will find it very convenient. We're pleased not only that it will be centrally located on campus, but also that it will have a home in one of the finest buildings in the state." The Catering and Events Office will move from its current ground floor location into the main office area vacated by the alumni association. "This will make us much more accessible to students, faculty and staff wanting to reserve space and plan events, as well as giving us proximity to our two ballrooms where many major events are held," Mindrum said. Funding for the renovation will come from the Office of the Executive Vice President and Treasurer. The Purdue Memorial Union is a self-supporting entity in the division of Housing and Food Services and is responsible for managing space in the Union and in portions of Stewart Center.
