January 16, 2004 All-woman jazz orchestra to perform at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Friday (1/23) in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Drummer Sherrie Maricle will lead the 14-member all-woman jazz orchestra through an evening of jazz that tackles big band jazz in a fresh, new way. The DIVA Jazz Orchestra is presented by Purdue Convocations as part of the Jan. 23-25 Purdue Jazz Festival. Debuting in 1993, DIVA is the brainchild of Maricle and Stanley Kay, a former manager and relief drummer for the Buddy Rich Big Band. "People have been predicting the end of the big band era since it first began back in the 1930s," Maricle says. "What we try to do is maintain what made that music so exciting: the beautiful melodies, the irresistible rhythms that make you tap your feet." Ticket prices range from $16-$24. Tickets are on sale now at any campus box office by calling (800) 914-SHOW or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
