December 8, 2000 Purdue police complete Operation Pull OverWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Police Department participated in Blitz 25 for Operation Pull Over between Nov. 19 and Dec. 2. Purdue police officers worked overtime during Operation Pull Over enforcing traffic laws with an emphasis on seatbelt usage among younger drivers. According to statistics from the Indiana Governor's Council on Dangerous and Impaired Driving, young drivers have the highest crash fatality rate. Younger drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than drivers age 45 to 64. The statistics also show that 65.4 percent of drivers under age 21 were fatally injured because they were not wearing safety belts. During the program, Purdue officers issued 47 citations for seatbelt violations, eight other citations and 36 warning for various traffic violations. Operation Pull Over is sponsored by the Indiana Governor's Council on Dangerous and Impaired Driving. More than 200 police agencies across the state participate. Grant money awarded to local agencies compensates police officers who volunteer to work overtime to enforce traffic laws. The next enforcement period will be Feb. 25 through March 10.
