December 8, 2000 Appointments and promotions Gary F. Lee, retiring as director of Purdue University Conference Division and associate director of the Continuing Education Administration, can add Sagamore of the Wabash to his list of accolades and honors. At a staff meeting Tuesday (12/6), Indiana State Sen. Ron J. Alting (R-Lafayette) presented Lee with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award, the highest award the governor can issue to a citizen for distinguished service to the state. Lee is retiring at the end of the year after 35 years with the university. Last year, a record 800 conferences brought an estimated 85,000 people to Purdue. The conference division brings in revenues of about $10 million annually. Director Todd Wetzel has announced three new appointments to the Purdue Convocations' senior staff. Laura Clavio has been promoted to assistant director. Her responsibilities include booking, production and education activities. She also will serve as advisor to the Student Concert Committee. Clavio previously was the department's education and production coordinator. Larry Sommers has been hired as assistant director for marketing. He will be responsible for all marketing, advertising and media relations for Purdue Convocations. Previously, Sommers was assistant director for marketing and promotions for Purdues Division of Recreational Sports. Jesica Webb is the new director of development and will oversee the solicitation of gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Webb previously worked as marketing coordinator for Purdues University News Service. Campus activities The Purdue Operator Services Office will be closed for the Christmas holiday from 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, until 7 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26. The Purdue operators will not be available to provide services such as directory assistance during this time. Callers who dial 494-4600 (off campus) or 0 (on campus) will hear a message advising the office is closed for the holiday. In case of an emergency, callers should dial 911 or contact Purdue Police at 494-8221. The Purdue Affirmative Action Office will locally sponsor a teleconference, "Best Practices of Organizations Utilizing Disability Management Strategies," at 2 p.m. Dec. 12, in Room 234, Potter Engineering Center. The teleconference is free, but registration is recommended by calling the Affirmative Action Office, (765) 494-7255. Faculty and staff honors English professor Margie Berns will be serving as the program chair for the 7th annual meeting of the International Association of World Englishes in Portland, Ore., Dec. 14-16. This year's topic is "English and Globalization: Facing Challenges and Maximizing Opportunities." Berns also has recently been elected first vice president/president-elect of the American Association of Applied Linguistics and will serve as program chair for that organization's annual meeting in 2002.
