'What do you want to be when you grow up?'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A course at Purdue University is designed to help adult students answer the age old question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?"

"Life and Career Planning," a three credit hour course, will meet Monday evenings from 6-9 p.m. beginning Jan. 8.

"It's becoming nearly impossible to find a career that lasts a lifetime," said Dorothy Hughes, counselor in the Office of the Dean of Students. "Today more and more people are discovering that they have a lifetime that lasts through several careers.

"This course is designed for adult students who did not enroll in a university after high school or did not complete their undergraduate degree. In the class, students will learn more about their personalities and interests and then be able to make a decision about what field of study to pursue."

Hughes teaches the course in an interactive style. She requires students to share ideas during in-class group exercises designed to develop and practice the interpersonal and presentation skills that will be required in the workplace.

The course is sponsored by the Span Plan Program in the Office of the Dean of Students and the Center for Life Long Learning. Span Plan grants, which pay the fee for one three credit hour course for part-time students, have been awarded for the spring semester. Applications for fall will be available at the end of the January.
