Purdue Press to start new e-book monograph program

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Beginning in January, Purdue University Press will begin accepting monographs for publication in its new e-only monograph imprint, Digital-I books.

The Digital-I imprint will provide an outlet for scholarly information that appeals to smaller market segments.

"It's difficult for academics to publish work in subject areas that have a very narrow focus because traditional publishing is cost prohibitive for presses," said Thomas Bacher, director of Purdue University Press. "Digital publishing will make information more affordable and will also help make more specialized research available.

"Each project, however, will undergo the same rigorous acceptance routine that regular scholarly monographs now face, including approval by the Press's editorial board," he said.

Unlike traditionally published books, the Digital-I imprint will be able to be read with e-book software, online through services such as ebrary or can be printed on demand if necessary. And, because costs are lower, the form will help return a greater percentage of revenues to authors.

University Press plans to publish eight to 10 Digital-I books annually. Each of the official Purdue University Press publications will be registered with the Library of Congress.

Purdue University Press was founded in 1960. The Press is a department of Purdue Libraries. Specializing in the areas of business, technology and health, the Press publishes 30-35 traditional books annually.
