Flights of fancy: Student planes take off

Students enrolled in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics aircraft design course will test-fly their remote controlled aircraft today (11/21) from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. in Mollenkopf Athletic Center.

The three aircraft, designed by student teams, weigh approximately 9-10 pounds each. One of the aircraft is a monoplane with a wingspan of 11 feet, the others are biplanes with wingspans of six feet.

"Flying in Mollenkopf Athletic Center demands that the aircraft possess excellent flying qualities," said Associate Professor Dominick Andrisani II. "They must reliably and precisely turn both right and left. Inability to turn fast enough will result in an immediate crash against the walls of the building. That has happened to student groups in previous years."

The event is free and open to the public.
