November 17, 2000 Purdue Airport carrier petitions to terminate serviceWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Great Lakes Aviation has filed a petition to terminate its air service at Purdue University Airport, effective Feb. 15. The petition states the reasons as increased costs associated with converting Great Lakes Aviation's operations to comply with a different set of federal regulations and recent increases in fuel costs. "There is a comment period in which our community will be responding and taking opposition against their petition," said Robert Stroud, airport director. "Our main concern is continuation of availability of O'Hare International Airport to our travelers. Even though we have excellent service to Detroit, Chicago has traditionally been the hub airport of choice for our travelers and it is very important that availability remains. "Governmental leaders have already been briefed on the situation and will be filing a response to the petition, as will the airport. As the process proceeds, we will keep the community up to date."
