Purdue police to participate in Operation Pull Over

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving is teaming up with the Purdue University Police Department and law-enforcement agencies around the state in Operation Pull Over, Blitz 25.

Officers will take part in increased traffic enforcement from Sunday (11/19) through Saturday, Dec. 2.

"We hope to send a strong message to young drivers in the campus community about safe driving techniques and seat belt usage," said Tim A. Potts, operations and training sergeant with Purdue police.

He pointed to statistics from the Center for the Advancement of Transportation Safety at Purdue. Among young drivers under age 21 who were fatally injured in automobile accidents, more than 65 percent were not wearing seat belts.

"This group also has the highest rate of involvement in fatal crashes than any other driver age groups," Potts said.

More than 180 police departments are participating in Operation Pull Over. The Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving created the awareness program to increase public safety by increasing seat belt usage and compliance with child safety laws in addition to decreasing impaired driving crashes, fatalities and injuries.
