State legislators receive Purdue
Extension Director's Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two former Indiana state senators were honored with the Purdue Cooperative Extension Director's Award, for their contributions to Extension.

Sen. Morris H. Mills, of Ladoga, Ind., and Sen. Katie L. Wolf, of Monticello, Ind., were recognized Tuesday (11/14) during the annual Purdue Extension banquet. Both retired at the end of the last legislative session.

"Sen. Wolf and Sen. Mills provided invaluable leadership for building the support of Purdue Extension in the General Assembly," said David Petritz, director of Purdue Extension. "To say this award is well-deserved is a great understatement for all they have provided."

Both senators were noted for their strong support of higher education, research and agriculture. They also were recognized as leaders within their respective parties in the areas of agriculture and agricultural issues.

The Director's Award is not an annual award, but is given when the Extension director chooses to recognize exemplary effort on behalf of the land-grant university mission.

Mills began his legislative career as a state representative from 1968 to 1972. He was an Indiana state senator since 1972, serving the 35th District. He was chairman of the commerce and consumer affairs committee, and also served on the finance and planning and public services committees, and on the state budget committee. He is a partner in Mills Brothers Farms. Mills received a bachelor's degree from Earlham College and a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University.

Wolf was first elected state senator in 1986, serving the 7th District. She was a state representative for two years before that. She was the ranking minority member of the agriculture and small business committee and also served on the appointments and claims, governmental and regulatory affairs, and natural resources committees. She is owner and manager of a family farm. She attended Indiana Business College and Purdue University.
