November 17, 2000 Purdue Extension honors longtime supportersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service honored individuals for championing the cause of Extension. Named Friends of Extension Tuesday (11/14) during the annual Purdue Extension banquet were Louise Beaman, Franklin, Ind.; Harriet Warren, LaGrange, Ind.; Wayne and Joann Emigh, Knox, Ind.; and Dr. John and Mary Jane Scamahorn, Greencastle, Ind. Tom Bechman, of Franklin, Ind., also was named a Friend of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Specialist Association (PUCESA). Louise Beaman is past state president of the Purdue Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching and was vice-president in 1999. She began her first term on the national CARET board in 2000. On behalf of P-CARET she has lobbied both in the Indiana Legislature and the U.S. Congress. Beaman has served on the Johnson County Extension Board for 10 years. She is in her second year as president and served four years as secretary. She also was chairperson for Farm Fest 2000, an agricultural tour sponsored by the Extension Board. Beaman was instrumental in facilitating a water well testing project this year. Beaman is in her second year as the first woman president of the Johnson County Farm Bureau, Inc. As a member of the Ag Study Committee, Beaman helped make recommendations for the Johnson County Comprehensive Plan Update. She has served on the Ag Day Planning Committee for several years and assisted at the Farm Bureau grain display for Farm Animal Days. Beaman's other Extension activities include serving as a Certified Sewing Educator and as the Open Class Sewing Superintendent at the county fair. Harriet Warren is in her third year as chairperson of the LaGrange County Extension Board, having served several terms as a board member. She also is active in P-CARET, promoting Extension to local, state and national government officials. In 2000, she made her third trip to Washington, D.C. as a state P-CARET delegate. Warren has been a director of the county 4-H Club Association for nearly 20 years, serving until 1998 as secretary. She continues as liaison between the association and the 4-H leaders organization. She was a local club leader for 14 years and served a two-year term on the 4-H State Advisory Committee. Warren is president of College Club, a group that funds student scholarships, and vice-president of the LaGrange County Library Board. Since starting the Cloverleaf 4-H Club in 1948, Wayne Emigh has been an active supporter of 4-H. He has participated on the 4-H Council; in the 4-H Adult Leaders Organization; and as 4-H electric project leader. He's been involved with the electric project on the state and local level, securing local trophy donations and other program support. He also assists with other 4-H projects. Wayne is on the Starke County Extension Board. His other offices and organizations include: treasurer and membership recruitment chairperson for the Starke County Farm Bureau, associate supervisor for the Starke County Soil and Water Conservation District, and treasurer of the county fair board. He also is active in the Starke County and North Central Beef Producers organizations. Wayne has served on the Purdue School of Agriculture Advisory Committee, the Pinney Purdue Agricultural Center Advisory Council and on the Indiana Bee and Honey Commodity Committee. Joann Emigh is active in Extension Homemakers. She coordinates annual ad sales for the 4-H Fair Preview and assists with the county Extension office. She also is the District Farm Bureau, Inc. woman's leader. Both Dr. John and Mary Jane Scamahorn have served on the Putnam County Extension Board. John served as president and Mary Jane served as both secretary and president. John served as Putnam County Fair Board president and still serves on the long-range planning committee. A practicing veterinarian, John helped develop and implement the Indiana 4-H veterinary science program and curriculum. He served as president of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association in 1991 and was named veterinarian of the year in 1994. John also served on the Purdue Animal Study Committee and was instrumental in shaping policy improvements for the control of rabies in Indiana. He also served on a state committee for Indiana Farm Animal Care, which drafted policy for the reasonable and humane care of farm production animals. Mary Jane has served as a 4-H leader for 25 years, promoting the 4-H clothing project. She has opened her home to hundreds of youth to assist with projects. John has served as rabbit club leader for 11 years. The Scamahorns operate a child care center in Greencastle, Ind., Mary Jane is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She also is a member of Tri Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma. John served on the governor-appointed Controlled Substance Advisory Committee. He has also served as a Boy Scout troop leader and assistant. Tom Bechman was honored as a Friend of PUCESA for his contributions in promoting Extension. A field editor/associate editor for Indiana Prairie Farmer magazine since 1981, Bechman has publicized a variety of Extension programs from local meetings and field days to regional and state events. He also has helped in promoting Purdue Extension specialists and educators and their expertise. Examples of his work in promoting Extension causes include articles to promote grain bin safety awareness and use of technologies associated with site-specific crop management. Bechman is a member of the Johnson County Extension Board and the Area VI P-CARET committee. He also has been a 4-H leader. Bechman earned two Purdue degrees, a bachelor's in animal sciences and agriculture education in 1957 and a master's degree in animal sciences in 1977.
