Purdue offers flu vaccine to faculty, staff,
retirees, students
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University will offer flu shots to the campus community from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday (11/17).
"We have just received our first shipment of 1,500 doses of the vaccine and will provide it to faculty, staff, retirees and students," said James Westman, director of the Purdue Student Health Center. The day-long program will take place in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility, between Mackey Arena and the Mollenkopf Athletic Center.
Those people who are over age 65, have chronic pulminary or cardiac problems, asthma or weakened immune systems are considered to be at risk for complications from influenza, Westman noted.
"We're especially encouraging people in these categories to take advantage of this opportunity," he said.
Purdue expects to receive additional vaccine in early December, and then will administer the vaccine at the Student Health Center throughout the flu season, which runs through March.
"That second shipment should be sufficient to meet campus demand for flu shots," Westman said.
The charge for the vaccine is $8 below cost for students. There is no charge for faculty, staff and retirees, who are covered by the Purdue Worklife Program.
