Purdue names assistant VP to streamline
enrollment management

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Douglas L. Christiansen, Purdue University director of admissions, has been promoted to assistant vice president for enrollment services and director of admissions and records, as part of an effort to continue to streamline and improve enrollment management.

In making the announcement, Thomas B. Robinson, vice president for student services, said Christiansen will supervise the Registrars Office as well as the Office of Admissions as part of the reorganization effort.

"Doug has given Purdue tremendous leadership in admissions, and he has been an integral figure in our evolving strategy of enrollment management," Robinson said. "We're looking to him to play a central role in coordinating our entire effort and to help to create a seamless process for recruitment, admissions, financial aid, orientation and retention."

Robinson said enrollment management means many things.

"When we say 'enrollment management,' many people think about our efforts to manage the undergraduate enrollment to ensure that we have the classrooms and faculty needed to guarantee all of our students a quality Purdue education," Robinson said. "But it also involves our initiatives to recruit a diverse class and the best and brightest students to Purdue. We are working to retain students, making sure that they have the support they need to stay in school and succeed.

"And we are utilizing technology to better control and use our student records to provide better services. Collaboration between these offices and within the entire student services area will eliminate duplication of effort and improve the gathering and exchange of information and data. The result is that applicants and students, as well as faculty and staff, will be better served.

"We are also working to integrate our business processes across departmental lines to improve efficiency and effectiveness."

A search is underway for a permanent registrar. Joy Garton Krueger has been serving as acting registrar since former Registrar Marlesa Roney left Purdue for a vice presidency at the University of Akron this summer.

Christiansen was appointed director of admissions in March 1995. He holds a doctorate of philosophy in educational administration, a master's degree in public administration and a bachelor's degree in political science, all from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Before coming to Purdue, Christiansen was associate director of the Office of Student Recruitment and High School Services at the University of Utah.
