Kids aplenty, kids galore at PMO Christmas Show

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Of the record 90 children from Greater Lafayette who auditioned for the PMO Christmas Show Kids' Choir in September, a lucky 28 are now getting ready for their December performance.

"The PMO Kids' Choir adds a magical touch to the Christmas Show because, in essence, Christmas is for children." said Lee Tartell, Kids' Choir director. "We love them, they are great, and they are a lot of fun to work with."

Not only does the choir add a "magical touch" to the program, but the experience also provides children exposure to the arts, the opportunity to work with area artists and the opportunity to gain experience performing.

"It is a wonderful opportunity for them to be around quality musicians and have Purdue students to serve as mentors," said Tammy Collier, mother of Kids' Choir member and Mayflower Mill Elementary School student Rachel Collier.

Many students enjoy their experience so much that performing in the Kids' Choir becomes a tradition. Some students even give up their after-school activities.

"I really enjoy singing in the Kids' Choir, but what I really want to do is be in PMO Express when I come to Purdue," said Megan Mohler, East Tipp Junior High School student and five-year Kids' Choir veteran.

Children chosen for the choir range from 7 to 13 years old and are enrolled in 10 area schools. They are:

• Kyler Breed, Lia Grace Burrell, Thomas W. Crecelius, Joseph Timothy Folta, Megan Kochert, Katie Morrison, Laura Schunk, Sarah Nancy Thompson, Hannah Rebecca Winger from Happy Hollow Elementary School.

• Dena Davidson, Noah Demerly, Charles L. Johnson, Sara Marie Yestrebsky from Klondike Middle School.

• Tara Emery Owen from Klondike Elementary School.

• Tammy Collier and Cody Butcher from Mayflower Mill Elementary School.

• Tony Anderson and Emily Ann Gulick from Wea Ridge Elementary School.

• Brian Andrew and Adam David Luhman from St. James Lutheran School.

• Devron Isaac Lee, Tawanza D. Stephens and Erin Walker from Miami Elementary School.

• Claire Breed and Ashley Christine Harding from Cumberland Elementary School.

• Jonathan N. Radcliffe from Burnett Creek Elementary School.

• Megan Mohler from East Tipp Junior High School.

• Timyael Barton from St. Mary's Elementary School

The 67th annual Christmas Show, directed by Brian Breed, hits the stage six times over three days in Elliott Hall of Music:

• Friday, December 8, at 8 p.m.

• Saturday, December 9, at noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

• Sunday, December 10, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Tickets are $23 for adults and $16 for students, and can be ordered by phone or mail from the Purdue Box Office at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-7469, or from Purdue Musical Organizations at (765) 494-3941 or (800) 893-3041.

The American Bus Association named the Christmas Show one of the Top 100 events in North America for 1998. In addition to the regional audience of 36,000 people who see the show live on campus each December, millions of people see it on public television stations nationwide. More than 1 million people have seen the PMO Christmas Show in Elliott Hall since its debut in 1933.

This is Breed's 12th consecutive year directing the show.
