Jischke announces new advancement organization

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Purdue President Martin C. Jischke today (11/2) announced a reorganization of the university's fund-raising, marketing and communication activities under a new Office of University Advancement, to be headed by a senior vice president.

The new administrative unit will include the University Development Office, the Office of University Relations and Purdue's radio stations, WBAA AM and FM.

Charles B. Wise

Jischke said he will appoint a committee to advise him on the selection of a senior vice president. Korn/Ferry International, a nationally recognized executive search firm, has been engaged to conduct the national search. The president invited members of the university community to nominate individuals to serve on the advisory committee by sending recommendations to him at his Hovde Hall office.

Charles B. Wise, vice president for development since 1985, has requested reassignment. Jischke said Wise has been appointed a vice president of the Purdue Research Foundation where he will focus on specific fund-raising projects.

Carolyn S. Gery, executive director of the President's Council, has been named interim vice president for development and will serve while the national search is conducted.

Carolyn S. Gery

"Carolyn is an experienced and very effective development officer, who will provide excellent leadership during the search, "Jischke said. "I am very grateful to Chuck Wise for many years of service to the university, and I am pleased that he will continue to assist with our development efforts through the Purdue Research Foundation. I have asked him to concentrate full-time on completion of specific university fund-raising efforts, and he is eager to begin."

Jischke said the reorganization is designed to bring about optimum coordination of Purdue's fund-raising, communications and marketing efforts.

"I believe very strongly that development and university communications should function together as seamlessly as possible," the president said. "Each of the units involved in this reorganization is functioning well, and they cooperate closely in many ways. However, as we move toward Purdue's next major fund-raising campaign, we will need a seamless and highly efficient organization, and I think this alignment is the best way to achieve that. Our national search will concentrate on identifying someone with outstanding skills in development and marketing, as well as strong leadership qualities. I'm confident that Purdue's world-class reputation and its exciting prospects for the future will attract first-rate candidates for the new position."

A 1969 graduate of Purdue, Gery was hired as the university's first full-time development officer in 1972. She organized the President's Council for alumni and friends of Purdue who contribute at the highest level. Under her leadership, the council has grown to more than 7,700 families. She also has served as associate director of development.

Gery initiated and has managed several key development efforts, including the Annual Fund; the Purdue Enrichment Program, which brings contributions from university employees; the Parents Fund; and the Phonathon.

Wise began his Purdue career in the business office in 1965, working his way up to vice president for business services in 1980. As vice president for development, he has been responsible for the university fund-raising effort, including annual, deferred and corporate giving, capital campaigns and the Alumni and Development Information Service.

A Purdue alumnus, Wise received his bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1965. He also attended Indiana University and is a graduate of the Institute for Educational Management, Harvard Business School, in 1972.
