Band leader and bassist Dave Holland, a native of England, has been playing music for almost 50 years. He taught himself to play the ukulele at age 4 and, by age 13, he mastered the guitar and bass. At age 15, Holland dropped out of school to pursue his music career. He released his first album, "Conference of the Birds," in 1972. The bassist has worked with jazz greats including Miles Davis, Chick Corea, Thelonious Monk and Stan Getz. Holland's jazz ensembles have taken many different shapes in the past, including the current quintet, which formed in 1997. Current members of the quintet include Robin Eubanks, Steven Nelson, Billy Kilson and Chris Potter. Eubanks, who plays the trombone, has recorded six jazz compact discs, and has appeared on "The Tonight Show," "Saturday Night Live" and the Grammy Awards. Nelson, who has performed with a wide array of artists, accompanies on the vibraphone. Kilson also has performed with many jazz ensembles including Bob James, Dianne Reeves and Terence Blanchard. Newest to the quintet is saxophonist Chris Potter, who replaces former member Steve Wilson. The quintet produced its 1999 album "Points of View," which won the 2000 Grammy for best jazz instrumental performance. The group also won the 2000 Jazz Journalist Association Award for best live performance. The quintet's latest recording, "Prime Directive," was released in early 2000. "We perpetually search for the next way to expand and improve our love of jazz," Holland says. "We like to experiment with interesting and difficult rhythms to make our form of jazz stand in a class of its own." Dave Holland Quintet is presented by Purdue Convocations as a part of the Jazz Set. CONTACT: Laura Sargent, Purdue Convocations. (765) 494-5045, sargentl@purdue.edu
