Award-winning harpist Mariko Anraku
to play at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Mariko Anraku will showcase her classical harp stylings at Purdue University at 8 p.m. Friday Nov. 17 in Loeb Playhouse.
The event is open to the public and admission is $9 per person. Tickets are available at campus box offices or can be charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.
Anraku debuted her solo career with the Toronto Symphony in 1987. Since then, Anraku has traveled the globe both as a recitalist and a member of many orchestras and chamber music festivals.
In 1995, she received first prize in the Concert Artists Guild Competition. Other credits include the Channel Classics Recording Prize, the Pro Musicis Foundation Award, third place in the International Harp Competition of Israel and first place in the Japan International Harp Competition.
Anraku received a master's degree from the Juilliard School in New York City and an artist's diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is the associate principal harpist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. When she is not touring, Anraku performs in hospitals, drug rehabilitation centers, prisons and schools for the blind in the United States, France, Italy and Japan.
Anraku has recently premiered works by Toshio Hosakawa in collaboration with traditional Japanese musicians and monks.
