Farmers can increase profit using techniques
taught at workshop

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With small profit margins on grain, farmers need to focus on maintaining grain quality, says a Purdue University Extension specialist. Purdue Extension and the Indiana Grain and Feed Association will address this issue next month at a series of post-harvest workshops.

The Purdue University Hands-on Post Harvest Training and Recertification Workshop will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Purdue Agronomy Research Center in West Lafayette; Nov. 14 at the Southwest-Purdue Agricultural Center in Vincennes, Ind.; and Nov. 16 at the Northeast-Purdue Agricultural Center in Columbia City, Ind.

The workshops are designed to give farmers and commercial elevator operators up-to-date information about preserving grain quality as it is stored through the winter and next summer.

"The workshops update attendees on the most recent information available on prevention and control of insects, rodents and mold, as well as how to aerate and design effective grain handling systems," said Linda Mason, Extension specialist in pests and stored grain.

"Since grain profit margins are small, farmers and grain elevator folks need to do what they can to maintain quality," Mason said. "If farmers can hold their grain while maintaining quality, they can wait for better selling prices."

Workshop attendees are eligible for pesticide license certification credit hours.

Advance registration is $70, and $80 the day of the workshop. Registration is limited and pre-registration is recommended. For more information, contact Mason at (765) 494-4586, or by e-mail at linda_mason@entm.purdue.edu.
