Sandra Leek to address violence and hate crimes

Sandra Leek, executive director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, will speak at the Purdue University Student Services Systemwide Seminar at 1 p.m. Wednesday (10/25) in the Atrium Dining Room of Hillenbrand Hall. Leek is a thought-provoking speaker who will address issues of violence and hate crimes and beneficial ways society can assist in the prevention. Purdue President Martin C. Earlier that morning, at 10:30 a.m. in Room 1136 Lynn Hall, Leek will discuss issues of violence and hate crimes to students who are taking IDIS 490B, a course devoted to the study of causes and solutions to hatred and violence. This class period will be open to the public. Rob Mate, assistant dean of students, teaches the course and can answer questions relevant to the topic of violence and hate crimes. "The goal of the class is to instill hope to the students that there are solutions to the problems that society faces," Mate says. "We are opening students' eyes by exposing them to the ugly realities of society and by the end of the course, I hope they become part of a positive change."
