Lecture to focus on gap between preschool
and public instruction
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. On Oct. 26, Purdue University's School of Consumer and Family Sciences and the Department of Child Development and Family Studies will offer a lecture titled "Bridging the Gap Between Children's Preschool Skills and Public School Instruction."
The lecture, by Dale Clark Farran, professor of education at Vanderbilt University, will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union, with a reception to follow. The event is free and open to the public but seating is limited. Reservations should be made by Friday (10/20) by calling (765) 494-7890.
Farran is director of the Susan Gray School for Children, a early intervention program. She has conducted research and intervention programs for high-risk children and youth throughout her career. Her current research focuses on the transition to school of children served in Title I preschool classrooms in public schools. Before taking on her position at Vanderbilt, she was a professor and chair of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Farran's talk is part of the Eva Goble Lecture Series, established in 1992 to honor the former dean of Purdue's School of Consumer and Family Sciences. As dean from 1967 until 1973, Goble took advantage of the Cooperative Extension Service's extensive statewide network to better acquaint the people of Indiana with Purdue. She also was instrumental in establishing the Twin Pines cooperative house and was the first recipient of Purdue's Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to Rural People of Indiana.
