October 12,2000 Department of Biomedical Engineering to be honoredWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University's Department of Biomedical Engineering will receive the Indiana Public Health Foundation's prestigious Tony and Mary Hulman Health Achievement Award tonight (Thursday, 10/12). The award recognizes excellence and innovation in the field of preventive medicine and public health for business and industry. Purdue is being honored for research in the field of tissue engineering, which involves the potential restoration and/or replacement of injured or missing body parts and organs. Purdue President Emeritus Steven C. Beering, himself a doctor, will present the award to Dr. Robert E. Hannemann, a prominent Lafayette physician and Purdue faculty member. Hannemann will accept the award on behalf of George Wodicka, head of Purdue's Department of Biomedical Engineering. The 16th annual award ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m. following a reception and dinner at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis. The Indiana Public Health Foundation Inc. was established in 1964 to advance public health through education and research. Proceeds from the annual dinner support scholarships, health science research and quality of life projects.
